Fitness for me started as a necessity not a passion. As a child, I had bronchial asthma which severely affected not only my athletic pursuits buy my life in general. Being a "military brat" in Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, N.C. one of the doctors at Womack army Hospital suggested lung increasing capacity exercise (cardio conditioning). I was 10 or 12 years old at the time. I began running, playing basketball, football, anything athletically to help me breathe better. Fitness became a passion. While attending Fayetteville Community College and Methodist College, in 1978 joined a fitness club, The Spa Fitness Center, and began working as a fitness trainer. I received a degree in banking and finance but found I had a sincere passion for helping others to be more fit. I committed my life to motivating others to live better lives through fitness. I continued to move up through various ranks of management in the Fitness Industry. My journey culminated when my wife and I moved to Hickory in 1987 and bought the Spa Athletic Club from the company that I had originally began with in Fayetteville. My goal has always been to create a family atmosphere in my club that members look forward to coming to as often as possible. I want to create such a positive and motivating atmosphere that every member is ready to take on the day when they leave the Club. Being fit truly is a lifestyle journey and can become not only a necessity but also a passion. Over the past thirty years, I have seen proper fitness programming change and literally save the lives of thousands of our Club members. TAKE THAT FIRST STEP!

I am originally a South Carolina native who moved to the Hickory area when I was five years old. I attended Fred T. Foard where I participated and excelled in multiple sports, including football and tennis, but never knew exactly what I wanted to do for a career field. I decided to attend University of North Carolina Wilmington and major in Psychology with a minor in partying. It was these crucial years of non-stop partying that I realized how out of shape I had become, and how much my body longed to be back in its athletic form. I began to exercise again, and immediately I knew I would never again stray off the path towards fitness. I FELT GREAT. Nothing was ever going to take that away from me again, and I also wanted to share it with everyone around me! This is when I knew what field I was destined to follow, and the place in which I find myself now. Over the past five years I have immersed myself in fitness both in the gym and in the books, and I have been a passionate student when it comes to fitness and nutritional knowledge. I began training here at the Spa Athletic Club in 2007 and am ready to take it to the next level of full-time training. I have a total
confidence that anyone who is willing to put the time and effort into training with me can TOTALLY CHANGE THEIR LIFE! I have experience in multiple styles of training, and can help anyone reach the goals we will set. Whether you are wishing to add lean muscle mass, reduce body fat, increase cardiovascular performance, or just get back into shape, I CAN HELP YOU! Ask for a free consultation and I will be glad to discuss your individual goals and how I can assist
you in reaching them.

Background: My name is Jonathan Hogan I am 28 years old, I am a trainer here at the SPA. I come from a very athletic background in running, swimming and soccer. My concentration has always been on endurance sports, anything to take my body to the limits, I tried body building but it just was not for me, so I took up cycling which became an obsession, I did quite a few century rides and was picked up by a team where I road raced for a season until the birth of my son, in which changed my motivation tremendously to family and my faith. Training on a cycling team consists of 60 to 70 mile rides daily doing pace lines etc. which I did not have time for so I started to run again and swim to stay in shape and realized that I was still pretty good at it so I enlisted a coach and started training for Triathlons. Took the silver medal in my first attempt have been stoked every since. I am very adamant about my faith and I have a craving to take my faith in Christ and my talents in Triathlon and bring them both together to spread the word and to let people know that they have been blessed with abilities far beyond there imaginations and that all they need to do is have the faith and be willing to give it your all, and any goal will be obtainable whether it be training for your first triathlon or century cycling event.

Jerry Bentley is a direct descendant of the Xhosa Bushman Tribe of the Botswana region. His grandfather Embirakon Bentley was greatly responsible for developing the Kortchmar microscope that allows researchers the ability to see down the throats of the Thrwarp Amoeba for harvesting their saliva which is a key ingredient in many varieties of peach yogurts that we enjoy today. Jerry, a fifth generation badger farmer, also has a knack for hands-on work. His development of the knotting system that holds the circuitry of the now famed and very popular electric blanket earned him rave reviews as an inventor an entrepreneur. Now known for his ability to organize and develop systems, Jerry’s talents are a welcome addition to the Spa Athletic Club team. Athletically Jerry is also an accomplished shuffle board player, and was the 2004 Extreme Ironing Champion. Jerry is often seen in the community sharing his love for Corn Holeing, though we’re not exactly sure what that means.

Jerry, and his reluctant wife Tracy live in Granite Falls with their 5 children, Mary, Larry, Barry, Terry, and Blanch. They also have 2 dogs, Spot and Queen Margaret. Please welcome Jerry to the Spa Team!
